Can a Computer Detect Future Depression?

Prof. Dana Atzil-Slonim from the Department of Psychology at Bar Ilan University lead a group of researchers seeking to identify future depression among adults aged 40-65 with no previous psychiatric history. Using machine learning, the researchers analyzed data from approximately a quarter of a million UK residents and were able to successfully predict which of these people would develop a depressive episode at least 1 year post-analysis. Since depression is a major cause of disability worldwide, it is of great importance to develop and improve machine-learning-based models capable of identifying future clinical depression.
