Prof. Ayal Hendel
CV
Prof. Ayal Hendel is a world-renowned lecturer and researcher in the field of genetic editing. His research focuses on the use of CRISPR technologies for genetic editing with the aim of developing genetic therapies for genetic diseases and cancer. Prof. Hendel's contribution to the field is reflected, among other things, by the fact that dozens of his articles have been cited thousands of times in the scientific literature.
In recent years, Prof. Hendel's laboratory has also played a key role in the development of a computational tool called CRISPECTOR, which is used for CRISPR-based analysis of trial results, allowing scientists around the world to develop more effective and safer genetic therapies.
Prof. Hendel also received a large grant from a research consortium funded by the European Union to investigate gene therapy strategies for sickle cell anemia. As part of this project, Prof. Hendel's laboratory will lead a work group that will test genetic editing accuracy in CRISPR-based medical uses.
In addition to his research activities, Prof. Hendel is a member of the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ASGCT), the European Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ESGCT), and the executive committee of the Israel Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ISGCT); he also chairs the CRISPR-IL scientific committee and is a member of the editorial board of the Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs Journal.
Prof. Hendel holds a BSc degree in life sciences from the Hebrew University and an MA degree and a PhD degree in biochemistry from the Weizmann Institute of Science. After receiving his PhD degree, Prof. Hendel began his postdoctoral research at the Weizmann Institute of Science, from which he transferred to Stanford University in California. Since returning to Israel in 2016, Porf. Hendel has been a senior lecturer at the Mina and Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences at Bar-Ilan University.
