Regenerative medicine
A research field that deals with the restoration and repair of tissues and organs.
In nature, certain animals exhibit exceptional tissue regeneration capabilities. When a starfish loses an arm, it can grow a new one, and there are starfish that can even regenerate their entire body from a single arm.
Tissue regeneration is also present in the human body, as occurs with a wound healing after injury. However, the natural regenerative capacity of the human body is limited, and injuries or diseases can cause permanent tissue damage. When trauma is caused to heart tissue, for example, the damage can be irreversible.Regenerative medicine integrates multiple disciplines in research, aiming to develop innovative methods and treatments that can repair, replace, or promote the regeneration of tissues and organs. The goal is to restore at least some of the normal function of damaged tissue, offer new methods for treating a variety of medical conditions, and improve the patient’s quality of life even in chronic or complex situations.
