CIP - a Peptide that will Fight Cancer
Cohesion is a protein complex that mediates the 3-D structure of chromatin and is involved in maintaining genome stability and function. Prof. Itay Onn and Dr. Nir Qvit, both from the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, developed the first peptide (short chain of amino acids), called CIP (cohesin-inhibiting peptide), with the ability to bind to the cohesin complex and inhibit its activity. The researchers demonstrated that treating human cells with CIP delays cell division. The peptide developed by Prof. Onn and Dr. Qvit has therapeutic potential in the treatment of cancer in that the inhibition of the cohesin complex in cancer cells by CIP could be a new strategy in inhibiting tumors cell proliferation.
